Another rare broadcast treasure has been released from our vault of vintage film never before seen by the general public! Thanks to the restoration expertise of Rare Sportsfilms Inc, the 1961 NFL Title Game, broadcast live from new City Stadium, Green Bay, is available on high-quality DVD! The original network kinescope has been restored so that you can now see the game better than the day it was broadcast over 50 years ago! This rare piece from Sunday December 31, 1961 shows the entire broadcast of the game, with Lindsey Nelson and Chris Schenkel handling the play-by-play! To watch a broadcast of NFL football from this era is really a treat, especially for Giant and Packer fans, as this is the OLDEST pro football complete-game TV broadcast in existence! Included are the pre-game, halftime and post-game shows, plus all the original vintage TV commercials!
This was the first NFL Title Game ever played in Green Bay, and legendary Packer coach Vince Lombardi had assembled a team of Bart Starr at quarterback, Paul Hornung at halfback (he could placekick, too!), Jim Taylor at fullback, Boyd Dowler at flanker and a defense which included Ray Nitschke, Willie Davis, Willie Wood and others who would be the backbone of the club for the rest of his Green Bay coaching tenure. This was the first of three NFL title games for New York Giants rookie head coach Allie Sherman. Y.A. Tittle and Charley Conerly both see action at QB for New York and other Giants players you’ll see include Ray Wietecha, Jack Stroud, Darrell Dess, Bob Gaiters, rookie Greg Larson, Joe Morrison, Rosey Brown, Joe Walton, Del Shofner, Kyle Rote, Alex Webster and Joel Wells. Other Packers shown throughout the game are Jim Ringo, Henry Jordan, Elijah Pitts, Herb Adderly, Forrest Gregg, Jesse Whittenton, Fuzzy Thurston, Norm Masters, Bob Skoronski, Bill Forester, Ron Kramer and Max McGee. Paul Hornung, on leave from the Army for this game, sets a new title game record with 19 points!
