First shown on this DVD are highlights of the 4th week of the 1961 season. “Time For Football”, shows highlights from all seven games of Sunday October 8, 1961 as Jim Leaming describes the action:

  • * Browns vs Redskins at Municipal Stadium, Cleveland – Young Len Dawson’s 17-yd TD pass to Ray Renfro caps Browns scoring for the day as Browns beat ‘Skins 31-7. Bobby Mitchell stars with TD reception, TD run and 64-yd punt return for TD! Norm Snead to Tom Osborne 10-yd TD pass is the only Washington score.
  • * Cowboys vs Vikings at Met Stadium – Dallas scores one TD in each quarter to blank Minnesota 28-0 in young Vikings’ 4th game ever! Scores are by Howton, Perkins and two by Frank Clarke on passes from Meredith and LeBaron.
  • * Eagles vs Steelers at Franklin Field – Pair of TD passes from Jurgensen to Retzlaff help bring Eagles 21-16 victory after trailing early 10-0. Clarence Peaks also with a 14-yd TD run. Buddy Dial, Rudy Bukich score TD’s for Pittsburgh.
  • * 49’ers vs Rams at Kezar Stadium – All TD’s are scored on runs as San Francisco shuts out L.A. 35-0! Two TD’s each by QBs Billy Kilmer and Bob Waters, but the first of the game is by J.D. Smith.
  • * Giants vs Cardinals at old Busch Stadium – Longest scoring play of the game is 80-yd TD run by Card’s Billy Stacy, but Giants beat St. Louis 24-9 on Y.A. Tittle to Del Shofner 44-yd TD pass, Alex Webster’s 1-yd TD run and Sam Huff’s fumble recovery for a TD!
  • * Packers vs Colts at Lambeau Field, Green Bay – Paul Hornung scores Packers’ first 31 points himself on 4 TDs and a FG! Willie Wood and Jim Taylor score the last two TDs, as Packers overwhelm Unitas, Lenny Moore and Colts 45-7!
  • * Bears vs Lions at Tiger Stadium – Three Chicago TD’s in 4th qtr doom Detroit, as Bears beat Lions 31-17 in close game most of the way! FG Jim Martin (3-0 Lions). TD pass, Morrall to Terry Barr (10-0 Lions). TD pass Billy Wade to Bo Farrington (10-7 Lions). FG Roger LeClerc (10-10). Pat Studstill 100-yd KO return (17-10 Lions). Wade to Ditka TD pass (17-17). Wade 1-yd TD run (24-17 Bears). Willie Galimore 54-yd TD run (final score, 31-17 Bears).

1961 Detroit Lions Highlights

Shown next on this 58-minute DVD is the 1961 Detroit Lions Highlights, narrated by Van Patrick and presented by Falstaff Beer (remember the cartoon commercials with Elwood and The Old Pro)? The Lions were a strong club in ’61, going undefeated on the road, knocking off the World Champion Packers in Green Bay and beating the Eastern runner-up Eagles in the 1961 Playoff Bowl in Miami following the end of the regular season! The Lion defense, with tackles Alex Karras and Roger Brown, top middle linebacker Joe Schmidt and Yale Lary and Night Train Lane in the secondary, could match the NFL’s best with size, speed and experience in all sectors.
