"THIS WEEK IN THE NFL"
All 8 Games of Sunday, December 22 (Week 6)
All four games in each Conference (October 22, 1967) are now together and in color on this new 50-minute DVD from Rare Sportsfilms! Here are the games, results, and some of the players you'll see:
Eastern Conference
New Busch Stadium - Cardinals vs Eagles - Norm Snead's TD passes to Jim Kelly and Ben Hawkins have Philadelphia out in front 14-3 by the end of the first quarter, but Cards bounce back and lead 20-14 at halftime on a pair of Jim Hart TD passes to Bobby Joe Conrad. In the third quarter, a touchdown pass to Jackie Smith and Johnny Roland's short run add to the Cardinal lead, now 34-14. Meanwhile the Cardinals blitz gives Snead more trouble in the second half, as he throws an interception to Pat Fischer, who returns it 76 yards for another touchdown and the Redbirds go on top, 41-14. A final 4th quarter TD pass, Hart to Jackie Smith, ends the scoring as Redbirds tally 45 straight points to overwhelm Eagles 48-14!
Municipal Stadium - Browns vs Bears - QB Frank Ryan, his favorite receiver Gary Collins, young Leroy Kelly and the running of Ernie Green are the keys to this game, which is still scoreless at halftime! A third quarter Ryan to Collins TD pass and another in the final quarter finishing the scoring, plus a nice TD run by Kelly earlier in the final quarter help give Browns a 24-0 win over Chicago. Collins catches 7 passes for 106 yards and Kelly has 102 yds rushing.
Yankee Stadium - Packers vs Giants - Packers score first on Elijah Pitts' 4 yd run, but new Giants QB Fran Tarkenton ties game with 22-yd aerial to Homer Jones. A subsequent 18-yd TD pass to Joe Morrison then gives New York its only lead of the day, 14-7. Pitts has two more TD runs, Don Chandler a 36-yd FG and Green Bay has a 27-14 lead by 4th quarter. When New York's Bill Triplett fumbles a KO return, Jim Grabowski (leading rusher of the day), scores to pad the Green Bay lead by 20 (34-14). Another Tarkenton to Homer Jones TD finishes the Giants scoring (34-21), but not Green Bay's. A 38-yd pass, Starr to Grabowski, adds to the score as the Packers pour it on, 41-21. With Donnie Anderson's TD run, Packers easily beat Giants 48-21.
Pitt Stadium - Cowboys vs Steelers - The thriller of the week! Bob Hayes scores the first two TDs on long passes from QB Craig Morton, but J.R. Wilburn has a total of 12 receptions on the day and helps Steelers make exciting comeback. Pittsburgh scores when QB Kent Nix tosses 5-yard pass to John Hilton, but Steelers still trail, 14-7 at halftime. In the final quarter, Nix, Hilton and Wilburn lead Steelers on another TD drive and Nix ties the game 14-14 on a one-yard keeper! A Danny Villanueva 36-yd FG puts Dallas ahead 17-14 before the Steelers begin their final scoring push. Nix drives the Steelers down the field once more and with 1 minute remaining, Wilburn catches his 12th pass for the go-ahead TD, putting Pittsburgh ahead for the first time, 21-17! However, with only seconds remaining, Morton throws a long pass to Lance Rentzel, who catches it, then fumbles it ahead. Dan Reeves, trailing the play, recovers the ball on the Steeler six! Desperately looking for a receiver on the final play, Morton is flushed out of the pocket, finally spots Pettis Norman in the end zone and threads the ball to him for a nail-biting 24-21 Cowboy comeback win at old Pitt Stadium!
Western Conference
Metropolitan Stadium - Vikings tie Colts - In the 2nd quarter, Raymond Berry, who caught Johnny Unitas' first NFL pass 12 years earlier, also catches his NFL record-breaking 2,119th! By midway through the third quarter the Vikings are leading the undefeated Colts 7-6 and are driving for another score. When Bill Brown plows into the end zone from the 1-yard line, the Vikings lead 13-6, and this lead holds until the 4th quarter. But the Colts storm back and when Tom Matte scores from 15 yards out, the Colts tie the game at 13-13. There are 10 minutes remaining when Kapp, scrambling like former Viking QB Fran Tarkenton, leads the Vikings downfield. Kapp's throw to Red Philips in the end zone gives the lead back to the Vikings, 20-13. But the game is tied again when John Mackey catches Unitas' 4-yd TD pass in the end zone (20-20). With only 8 seconds left, the Vikings must punt, however #76 Fred Miller crashes into Minnesota punter Bobby Waldon and the penalty pushes the Colts out of a chance to get into field goal range, so the game ends tied.
Kezar Stadium - 49'ers vs Saints - Three FGs furnish all the scoring until QB John Brodie finds Dave Windsor with a 13-yd TD pass to end the first half, San Francisco leading, 10-6. Winless Saints, playing only their 6th game ever, score their first TD early in the second half when QB Gary Cuozzo hits Walter "The Flea" Roberts with a 47-yd TD bomb to give N.O. a temporary 13-10 lead. Later Brodie connects with Dick Witcher on a 15-yd TD strike, and 49'ers take back the lead, 17-13. A 4th quarter Davis FG and Ken Willard's 2-yd TD plunge seal a 27-13 49'er win.
Tiger Stadium - Lions vs Falcons - First score of the game is Lem Barney's interception of Terry Noffsinger's pass for a 44-yd return and a TD! The teams trade FGs in the second quarter and it's 10-3 Lions at the half. Lion QB Karl Sweetan's 3rd-quarter 25-yd TD pass is gathered in by Tom Nowatzke (17-3), and Sweetan's 4th quarter 15-yd pass to Bill Malinchak is good for 7 more for a final score of 24-3 over second-year Falcons.
The Coliseum - Redskins tie Rams - Heavily favored Rams' "fearsome foursome" hold Redskins to only 49 yards rushing for the game, however Sonny Jurgensen QBs the 'Skins to 4 TDs to tie L.A., 28-28! Jurgensen's 86-yd first quarter TD pass to Charlie Taylor is first score of the game. Dick Bass scores on a 1-yd run in the second quarter to tie it. Then a Roman Gabriel to Jack Snow 61-yd TD pass puts Rams in front, 14-7. A Jurgensen to Jerry Smith TD pass ties it up, 14-14 by halftime. Another Jurgensen to Smith TD in the 3rd quarter puts 'Skins ahead again, 21-14, but Les Josephson's 10-yd TD run soon ties it again, 21-all. Late 4th quarter another hookup to Smith (their 3rd) puts Redskins ahead, 28-21. However, a six-yard pass from Gabriel to Bernie Casey, this time with only three minutes left, ties the game - final score, 28-28!
