1963 Detroit Lions Highlights
First shown on this 48-minute DVD is the 1963 Detroit Lions Highlights, narrated by Van Patrick and presented by Altes Beer. Of course the suspension of All-Pro DT Alex Karras by Commissioner Pete Rozelle is not mentioned in this Lions promotional film, but it sorely hurt the defensive line during the ’63 season. In addition, injuries took a toll on three starting defensive backs (Yale Lary, Night Train Lane and Gary Lowe), and even though Darris McCord and Joe Schmidt were still in the starting lineup, they were sub-par physically. A pleasant surprise was Earl Morrall developing into a starting QB, even beating out Milt Plum for the starting job, however the Detroit attack was not strong enough to win consistently with the defense no longer healthy. Lions fans will remember many other players which are shown in action on this DVD: Backup QB Jim Ninowski, Nick Pietrosante, Dick LeBeau, Jim Gibbons, Hopalong Cassady, Gary Lowe, Sam Williams and at the end of the film there are nice closeups of Morrall, Terry Barr, Gail Cogdill, John Gordy, Roger Brown, Wayne Walker and Joe Schmidt!

"PRO FOOTBALL KICKOFF"
“Pro Football Kickoff” was a 15-minute TV show that came on the air just before the old NFL “Game-of-The-Week” in the early 1960’s. By 1963, New York Giants offensive coach Kyle Rote had replaced Tom Brookshier as host of the show, with Tel Ra sportscaster Jim Leaming still describing the action segments. This week’s show is sponsored by Hamilton Watches, Rise Instant Lather and Score Hair Cream for men and you’ll see all of those original commercials. As this is the final week of the 1963 regular season, the show concentrates on the big game at Wrigley Field that will decide the Western Conference title, Bears vs Lions! Shown in action or in nice close ups are Rosey Taylor, QB Billy Wade, Willie Galimore, Bo Farrington, Joe Marconi of the Bears. Lions shown include QB Earl Morrall, Terry Barr, Gail Cogdill and DT Roger Brown. At the end of the show is a feature on Pro Football Kickoff’s “NFL Player of the Year”, Y. A. Tittle. Both close up and action scenes show Tittle running and also passing to several Giants receivers including Phil King, Del Shofner and Frank Gifford.
