1960 and 1961

CHICAGO BEARS

The 1960 and 1961 Chicago Bear highlights are now both available on a new DVD, thanks to the restoration expertise of Rare Sportsfilms, Inc! In 1960, neither Ed Brown nor Zeke Bratkowski was particularly impressive at moving the Bear offense. However Bill George and Doug Atkins lead a defense that had the Bears only half a game behind the first-place Colts going into the 10th week of the season vs Green Bay. But the Packers killed off any Chicago playoff hopes with a 41-13 Bear drubbing in Wrigley Field, and thereafter the club was shut out the rest of the year, 42-0 by the Browns and 36-0 by the Lions, ending a somewhat disappointing season. 1961 is a better year, and against the Lions, the Bears set a new team record for the longest scoring play from scrimmage - a 98 1/2 yard catch and run by Bo Farrington! At Baltimore, the Bears stun the tough Colts with a tight 21-20 win and two weeks later three unanswered touchdowns against the Packers at least make the score close, as the Bears come up just short and lose to the eventual World Champions, 31-28. On the day Lou Groza becomes the NFL's all-time points leader breaking Don Hutson's old record of 825 points, the Bears beat the Browns to gain revenge over the 1960 loss at Cleveland. The biggest bright spot of the Bear's season however, is a surprising youngster out of University of Pittsburgh who wins NFL Rookie of the Year honors. The tough young tight end shows great NFL savvy right from the start - an excellent receiver and even better blocker who would become a Bear legend in the years to come - Mike Ditka.

In these two historic team highlight films narrated by Jack Brickhouse, you'll see all the Bears of 1960 and 1961 - Ed Brown, Zeke Bratkowski, Bill George, Stan Jones, Erich Barnes, Earl Leggett, Willie Galimore, Jim Dooley, Will Dewveall, Rick Casares, Larry Morris, John Aveni, Angie Coia, Johnny Morris, Ritchie Petitbon, Charlie Bivins, J.C. Caroline, Ted Karras, Roger LeClerc, Roger Davis, Doug Atkins, Joe Fortunato, Charlie Sumner, Harlan Hill, Johnny Adams, Herman Lee, Bo Farrington, Maury Youmans, Fred Williams, Johnny Mellekas, and the '61 newcomers Billy Wade from the Rams, Rosey Taylor, Dave Whitsell and Mike Ditka, shown making 19 different pass receptions in the 1961 film!
