"THE LEAGUE THAT CAME IN FROM THE COLD"

A History of the American Football League,

1960-1967

Another rare broadcast treasure has been released from our vault of vintage film not seen in over 50 years! This fascinating 1968 TV special on the 8-year success story of the American Football League is now available in color on DVD for the first time ever! Even included are original Dupont commercials for Zerex antifreeze and Lucite paint! Narrated by Lindsey Nelson, this show illustrates how the colorful and sometimes wacky owners and their fledgling AFL of the early 1960's battled great odds, bankruptcies and ridicule to eventually become a driving force that resulted in the NFL-AFL merger agreement by 1966, and ultimately the creation of the biggest annual single game in sports - the "Super Bowl"!

One by one, the history of each club is touched upon and stories by club owners and interviews with the AFL players themselves reveal what it was like playing in the formative years of the league. You'll hear from Lance Alworth, Lamar Hunt, Bud Adams, Billy Sullivan, Al Davis, Murray Goodman, Len Dawson, Houston Antwine, Gino Cappelletti, Babe Parilli, Tom Day, Bill Mathis, Hank Stram, Johnny Robinson, Frank Tripucka, Paul Brown and Bob Johnson, as the league grew from playing Oiler games on a high school field in Houston to modern facilities such as Shea Stadium, San Diego Stadium and the Astrodome by 1967! Later shown are some highlight clips from both Super Bowls I and II and Len Dawson predicts that by this year ('69 Super Bowl) the AFL Champion may actually beat the established NFL!

All of the following players are shown in this film: Wahoo McDaniel, Joe Namath, Don Maynard, George Sauer, Pete Lammons, Emerson Boozer, Weeb Ewbank, Tom Sestak, Ron McDole, Jim Dunaway, Mike Stratton, John Tracy, Harry Jacobs, Lou Saban, Cookie Gilchrist, Jack Kemp, Elbert Dubenion, Art Powell, Pete Gogolak, Nick Buoniconti, Jim Nance, Mike Garrett, Otis Taylor, Abner Haynes, Bobby Bell, Buck Buchanan, George Blanda, Charlie Hennigan, Woody Campbell, George Webster, Miller Farr, Steve Tensi, Floyd Little, Bobby Burnett, John Hadl, Paul Lowe, Keith Lincoln, Ron Mix, Brad Hubbard, Dick Post, Speedy Duncan, coach Sid Gilman, Billy Cannon, Clem Daniels, Hewritt Dixon, Rodger Bird, Ben Davidson, Kent McCloughan, Fred Biletnikoff, Pete Banaszak and Daryle Lamonica. By 1967 expansion of the league had been completed with the addition of the new Miami Dolphins (George Wilson and George Wilson, Jr, Joe Auer, Bob Griese, Jack Clancy and Larry Csonka) and the Cincinnati Bengals, set to begin play in the Fall of '68. You'll hear Paul Brown address his players and see work on the practice field (QB John Stofa, Warren McVea and assistant coach Bill Johnson).
