NEW YORK GIANTS
- Season Highlights -
With long-time coach Steve Owen gone, the 1954 Giants began a new era with an outstanding influx of coaching talent. Former Giants player Jim Lee Howell took over as head coach. Coming in from West Point to take control of the offense was 41-year-old Vince Lombardi, who installed the power sweep and halfback option. Promoted to playing coach in charge of the defense was Tom Landry, another football genius who kept his All-Pro status as cornerback while refining the 4-3-4 defense as a coach. The Giants won four of their first five games, but lost three of their last four (season-ending injuries to both QB Charley Conerly and star halfback Frank Gifford) to finish third in the NFL Eastern Conference.
This rare 23-minute B & W film, presented by Miller Brewing Company, is now on DVD and the original narration is by New York Broadcaster Marty Glickman. Shown are highlights from nine of the 12 games played (see schedule below). You'll see closeups of many of the Giants at the beginning of the film, and all of the following players are shown in action: QB's Bob Clatterbuck, Conerly and Don Heinrich, Frank Gifford, Herb Johnson, Cutter Long, Kyle Rote, Eddie Price, Ken MacAfee, Bob Schnelker, Bob Topp, Ben Agajanian, John Cannady, Bill Svoboda, Ray Wietecha, Cliff Livingston, Dick Nolan, Herb Rich, Em Tunnell, Dick Yelvington, Russ Carroccio, George Kennard, Jack Stroud, Barney Poole, Pat Knight, Ray Collins, Ray Krouse and Johnny Rapacz.
