1965
DAYTONA
The color highlight film of the 1965 Daytona 500, plus part of the original B & W TV broadcast of the race are now available on a new 26-minute video from Rare Sportsfilms! The first third of the video is the story of the race in quick capsule summary and in color, including the pre-race excitement with emphasis on two top Ford contenders, Fred Lorenzen and Marvin Panch. Nice closeups of several cars are shown, including those of Lorenzen, Panch, Bobby Johns, Junior Johnson, Darel Dieringer, Ned Jarrett and Dick Hutcherson. Out on the track, others shown at speed are Jerry Grant, Tiny Lund, Earl Balmer and Donald Tucker. Before the race begins, the horrible crash involving Rod Eulenfeld, Bill DeCoster and 11 other cars in the Friday Twin 100 is shown!
The Daytona 500 is barely underway when Pete Stewart in the white #53 Dave Warren Ford smashes the wall and is out. Hard-charging Junior Johnson leads the first 27 laps until he blows a RF tire and hits the wall! Pit stop action is shown, especially when leaders Marvin Panch and Bobby Johns come in together for their first pit stops. Johns gets out first, but Panch re-takes the lead as the two jockey back and forth with rain approaching. After a small shower, the Panch-Johns battle continues before both Panch and Johns again come in for their last pit stops. Lorenzen, getting better fuel mileage because of a different gear ratio, stays out and now has a full lap lead over Panch and Johns. Panch, leading Johns and now slightly over a lap behind Lorenzen, tries desperately to unlap himself as storm clouds gather once again. But Panch taps Lorenzen and spins out on the backstretch, eliminating himself from contention in the most important incident of the race! Five laps later, a downpour arrives, the race is red-flagged and Lorenzen, who by now is almost out of gas, is the winner after 133 laps of racing!
In addition to the story of the race in color, part of the "tape-delayed" Black & White original TV broadcast of the event (with original commercials) is included on this tape! This segment begins with the re-start on lap 105 after the first rain shower, with Panch leading and Johns second. Bobby Johns' last pit stop is shown in its entirety, then Marvin Panch pits, with the Wood brothers crew shown servicing the red #21 Ford. As Fred Lorenzen stays out on the track stretching his fuel mileage, race commentators Bill Fleming and Dan Gurney flash back to an earlier interview with Lorenzen, in which he explains his pre-race strategy. The race is re-joined after the interview just in time to see the dramatic incident involving Lorenzen and Panch which will decide the race! The 500 is soon red-flagged, and while officials wait out the rain, both Panch and Lorenzen are interviewed together and comment on the incident! After the race becomes official, a happy Fred Lorenzen, holding his trophy, is interviewed in victory lane!
