1964
WORLD SERIES
For
the first time ever, the highlights of every game of the 1964
World Series are now available in beautiful, natural COLOR on
a new DVD from Rare Sportsfilms! Narrated by
famed Cardinal broadcaster Harry Caray, this fabulous new DVD
brings back all the nostalgia of this memorable fall classic,
the last World Series for Yankee legend Mickey Mantle! Even
though hobbled somewhat by leg injuries, “The Mick”
hits .333, leads the Yanks in RBI’s (8) and hits 3 home
runs, setting a new World Series record of 18!
Actual
full-COLOR game-action highlights of all the big plays of every
game of the series are included! You may have seen some footage
of this series on VHS or TV highlight shows in the past, but
with poor, reddish color! Now, with the help of the most modern
electronic equipment, you can see it again in natural color!
Every scene in the film (numbering in the hundreds) has been
individually restored digitally to bring back the color and
picture sharpness of the original color print! You’ll
see great shots of both ballparks: OLD Yankee Stadium (before
remodeling) and especially old Busch Stadium (formerly Sportsman’s
Park) colorfully decked out in World Series bunting and great
shots of the players including Tim McCarver, Lou Brock, Mike
Shannon, N.L. MVP Ken Boyer, Curt Flood, Bill White, Ron Taylor
and Roger Craig of the Cardinals. New York Yankees featured
include Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris, Tom Tresh, Elston Howard,
Joe Pepitone, Clete Boyer, Bobby Richardson, and manager Yogi
Berra!
Game 1 at
old Busch Stadium: Ray Sadecki vs Whitey Ford –
Mike Shannon’s 2-run homer in the Cardinal 6th ties the
game 4-4 and the Cardinals score two more off reliever Al Downing
to take a 6-4 lead after 6 innings of the opener. Veteran Barney
Schultz pitches 3 innings in relief as St. Louis wins, 9-5.
Tom Tresh (3 RBI) cracks a double and home run for New York.
Game 2 at
old Busch Stadium: Mel Stottlemyre vs Bob Gibson –
Tom Tresh’s RBI single in the 6th inning breaks a 1-1
Gibson-Stottlemyre pitching duel and leads the way to an 8-3
Yankee victory in the second game. Although loser Gibson strikes
out 6 in 3 innings, Stottlemyre is in total command, going the
route for a complete-game win. Phil Linz collects three hits,
including a homer for the Yanks!
Game 3 at
Yankee Stadium: Jim Bouton vs Curt Simmons –
Fans will never forget the ending of this game, tied 1-1 in
the bottom of the ninth with Mickey Mantle leading off against
reliever Barney Schultz! Mantle smashes the first pitch high
into the third deck of Yankee Stadium to give the Yanks a 2-1
lead in the series!
Game 4 at
Yankee Stadium: Ray Sadecki vs Al Downing – The
Yanks score three runs in the first inning, but get only 2 hits
after that off Roger Craig and Ron Taylor. Meanwhile, Ken Boyer’s
grand slam in the 6th gives the Cardinals a 4-3 victory in game
4!
Game 5 at
Yankee Stadium: Bob Gibson vs Mel Stottlemyre –
Tom Tresh’s two-run homer in the ninth off Bob Gibson
ties the game 2-2, but Tim McCarver’s big three-run blast
in the Cardinal 10th is the winning blow in this 5-2 Cardinal
victory which sends the Cardinals back to St. Louis with a 3-2
edge in the series.
Game 6 at
old Busch Stadium: Jim Bouton vs Curt Simmons –
The Bombers break loose in game 6 with Maris and Mantle hitting
back to back homers off Curt Simmons in the 6th. Joe Pepitone
adds and grand slam in the 8th to sew up an 8-3 Yankee victory
for Jim Bouton, and the series is tied at three games apiece!
Game 7 at
old Busch Stadium: Bob Gibson vs Mel Stottlemyre –
The Cardinals score 3 runs each in the 4th and 5th innings,
thanks in part to a homer by Lou Brock and lead the final game
all the way. Phil Linz hits another homer and the Boyer brothers
each smash round trippers. Mantle’s three-run homer in
the 6th is his third of the series and his last in World Series
play. The Cardinals win 7-5 and Gibson, with two wins and 31
strikeouts, is series hero!
