"MOTOR TREND 500"
At Riverside
The very
first 500-mile stock car race ever run on a road course is now available
on DVD from Rare Sportsfilms, Inc! The entire event is covered
from the time the cars enter the grounds and are unloaded, through
practice, qualifications and including all the race highlights to
winner Dan Gurney in victory lane! Rare Sportsfilms has even added
a bonus! The primary film of the race was shot by Championship Racefilms,
however we have also added scenes of the race shot by another company,
Dynamic Films, which gives even more different views of the many
spins and crashes!
On Pole Day, a pair of Ray Nichels
'63 Pontiacs qualify to start side by side on the front row: car
#01 Paul Goldsmith, and car #02 A.J. Foyt. Another Nichels car,
#97 Len Sutton, starts fourth. Fireball Roberts is driving the #22
Banjo Mathews Pontiac and Pontiacs start the first seven spots!
Saturday's Consolation Race is shown, a race to decide the qualifying
order for positions 21-44. Bobby John's #7 is shown spinning out
of this race, but finishes fifth to capture the 25th starting position.
The Consolation Race is won by Billy Wade, who is driving the white
#5 Cotton Owens Dodge.
Before the main event the next day,
close-up camera shots show Ray Nichels with pole-sitter Paul Goldsmith
and A.J. Foyt in his car buckling up. Also shown are pre-race favorites
Fireball Roberts and Len Sutton. Before the race is a lap old, Foyt
gets by Goldsmith in turn 9 and grabs first place! The race is full
of spins: Joe Ruttman, Bill Foster, Jim Pardue, Jim Hurtubise, Sal
Tovella, Hal Beal, Troy Ruttman, Scotty Cain, Carl Joiner, Fred
Lorenzen, Danny Letner in the esses, Joe Weatherly and Marshall
Sargent, who ends up on the hay bales in turn 6! There are also
three spectacular crashes! Danny Weinberg's #23 Pontiac flips three
times on the bank, but lands right-side up! NASCAR points leader
Jim Paschal's brakes fail in turn 9 and after losing a wheel, his
car does a spectacular series of rolls before flying over the guardrail
and disappearing! Close-ups show Jim (who's not seriously hurt)
being helped out of the wreck.
Then after 122 laps, the camera catches
Clem Proctor flipping over the guardrail and sailing out of sight
in another spectacular crash! Much pit action is also shown throughout
the race, including stops by Parnelli Jones, Troy Ruttman, Dan Gurney
and Fireball Roberts. When Roberts pits on lap 101, Gurney takes
the lead for good. Gurney's last pit stop is covered, and after
a crash near the end of the race, Gurney's white #28 Holman-Moody
Ford crosses the finish line with the yellow out, the winner of
the first "Motor Trend 500" at Riverside!
Additional views are shown of the
many spins and crashes, plus race action from a different perspective
on the special bonus at the end of the DVD!
