-
Game
1 at Candlestick Park, Whitey Ford vs Billy O’Dell
– Roger Maris’ two-run double gets the Yankees
off and rolling in the first inning, but when Mays scores
for the Giants in the second, it ends Ford’s consecutive
scoreless inning streak at 33 2/3. Hiller’s double and
Alou’s hit in the third tie the game, but the Yanks
break away in the 7th on Cletis Boyer’s HR and three
more runs in the last two innings.
-
Game
2 at Candlestick Park, Jack Sanford vs Ralph Terry
– With the Giants ahead 1-0 in the 7th inning, Willie
McCovey smashes a tremendous homer over the right field fence
and 24-game winner Jack Sanford shuts out the Yanks 2-0 on
only 3 hits!
-
Game
3 at Yankee Stadium, Bill Stafford vs Billy Pierce
– After 6 ½ innings in a scoreless game, the
Yanks score three in the 7th, and Roger Maris becomes the
hero of the game. His base hit drives in the first two runs
and alert base-running allows him to also score the winning
run in a 3-2 Yankee victory. Giant’s catcher Ed Bailey’s
2-run 9th inning homer leaves the Giants just one run short!
-
Game
4 at Yankee Stadium, Juan Marichal vs Whitey Ford
– For the second time in two days, a Giant’s catcher
hits a two-run homer, only this time it’s Tom Haller
off Whitey Ford in the second inning. With the score tied
2-2 in the 7th, second baseman Chuck Hiller hits the first
N.L. grand slam in World Series history, giving the Giants
the runs they need to eventually win 7-3!
-
Game
5 at Yankee Stadium, Ralph Terry vs Jack Sanford
– Hot hitter Jose Pagan’s single in the third
and homer in the 5th account for the Giant’s first two
runs, but with the score tied 2-2 in the 8th, Tom Tresh wallops
what proves to be the winning homer, a three-run shot scoring
Bobby Richardson and Tony Kubek in front of him, and the Yanks
now take a 3-2 edge in the series heading back to San Francisco.
-
Game
6 at Candlestick Park, Billy Pierce vs Whitey Ford
– In a battle of lefties, Pierce tosses a brilliant
3-hitter as the Giants square the series at 3-3 with a 5-2
victory. Maris hits solo HR in the 5th.
-
Game
7 at Candlestick Park, Ralph Terry vs Jack Sanford
– The two best pitchers of the series square off in
the finale, and what a climax, as this 1-0 thriller will always
be the most remembered game of the series! The only run scores
in the 5th, when Kubek grounds into a double play, with Bill
Skowron scoring from third. In the last of the ninth with
two outs and runners on second and third, Willie McCovey smashes
a rocket shot right at Bobby Richardson, who grabs it and
hangs on for the final out as the Yankees win their 20th World
Championship!
