Following the official 1954 World Series film by Major League Baseball (long version), is a short version or World Series wrap-up, produced by one of the national TV sports news services of the '50's. This contains short highlights of the first and third games and provides new footage now available for the first time ever! Finally you'll see a 1953 interview with the Indian's Larry Doby, as he talks about the 1948 World Series and comments about his days in the Negro Leagues with Roy Campanella, Satchel Paige and Monte Irvin.
Game 1 at The Polo Grounds - Bob Lemon vs Sal Maglie - The heavily favored Indians put two quick first inning runs on the board when leadoff man Al Smith is hit by Maglie, Bobby Avila singles and Vic Wertz triples. With the game tied 2-2 in the 8th and two Indians on base, Vic Wertz (already 3-for-3) smashes what looks to be a bases clearing hit, however Willie Mays makes one of the great catches in series history to rob Wertz and his fabulous throw keeps any runs from scoring! In the 10th inning with the game still tied, Mays walks, steals second, and after Hank Thompson is purposely passed, soon-to-be series hero "Dusty" Rhodes comes off the bench and hits a game-winning 3-run homer!
Game 2 at The Polo Grounds - Johnny Antonelli vs Early Wynn - Again the Indians jump out in front early! Leadoff man Al Smith hits the first pitch of the game for a home run and the Tribe leads 1-0 thru 4 1/2 with Wynn pitching beautifully. After a walk to Mays and a hit by Hank Thompson in the fifth, Dusty Rhodes is again sent up to pinch hit for Irvin. Again Dusty delivers with a run-scoring single to tie the game! Thompson scores on an infield out and the Giants lead 2-1. Rhodes later smashes a long HR in the 7th to ice the game and Giants win 3-1.
Game 3 at Municipal Stadium -Ruben Gomez vs Mike Garcia - The Giants jump on Garcia for a run in the first and score three more in the third as Dusty Rhodes comes through with a 2-run pinch single with the bases loaded. With relief help from Hoyt Wilhelm, Gomez tames the stunned Indians, 6-2.
Game 4 at Municipal Stadium - Don Liddle vs Bob Lemon - The Giants mop up the fourth game, and after 4 1/2 innings lead 7-0. Lemon, working on only 2 days rest, gives up six of the runs and Newhouser is also ineffective in relief, as Narleski, Mossi and Garcia all see action. In the fifth, Cleveland pinchhitter Hank Majeski blasts a 3-run homer, but it's all Indians fans have to cheer about in this game. The Giants win 7-4 to become only the second N.L. team to sweep a World Series! Dusty Rhodes, who did not appear in the final game, is the hero of the series (4 hits, 2 HR and 7 RBI in only 6 at-bats) and Willie Mays' catch will always be remembered as one of the great plays in World Series history.
