1953
GREEN BAY PACKERS
The Green Bay Packers had a forgetful season in '53, going 2-9-1 and beating only one team all year - the new Baltimore Colts (twice)! Not surprisingly, head coach Gene Ronzani was second-guessed by the fans throughout the season. With two games left on the schedule, he was fired and assistants Hugh Devore and Ray McLean finished out the season guiding the club. Babe Parilli and Tobin Rote shared quarterbacking duties throughout the year.
This rare film (it's the only copy known to remain in existence) is narrated by Jim Leaming and covers the highlights of all but one of the 12 games of the 1953 Packer season. The 46-minute B & W film has now been restored to like-new condition and brings back great memories and the feel of Packer football at old City Stadium (the building of Lambeau Field was still four years away) and at new County Stadium, Milwaukee, where the '53 season opener was the first NFL game ever played in the stadium! Great shots throughout the film also show action from road games at other old ballparks that were the homes for several NFL teams during those early years: Forbes Field, Wrigley Field, Briggs Stadium, etc.
In addition to Rote and Parilli, you'll also see other Packers of the past, such as fullbacks Fred Cone and Howie Ferguson, halfbacks Al Carmichael, Byron Bailey, Gib Dawson, Breezy Reid, Don Barton and Jack Rabbit Boone, and ends Billy Howton, Bob Mann and Clive Rush. On defense you'll see Joe Walker, Marvin Johnson, Howie Ruetz, Bob Dillon, Carl Elliott, Len Szafaryn and many others. NFL stars on other teams shown battling the Packers throughout the season include Otto Graham, Lou Groza and Dante Lavelli of the Browns, Tommy O'Connell, George Blanda and Jim Dooley of the Bears, Norm Van Brocklin, Crazy Legs Hirsch, Dan Towler, Vitamin Smith and Tank Younger of the Rams, Fred Enke, Buddy Young and Bert Rechichar of the Colts, Jim Finks and Lynn Chandnois of the Steelers, Y.A. Tittle, Joe Perry and Hugh McElhenny of the 49'ers and Bobby Layne, Doak Walker, Hunchy Hoernschemeyer and rookie Joe Schmidt of the champion Lions!
