The original Minnesota Vikings highlight film from their first season in the NFL is now available on DVD from Rare Sportsfilms, Inc.! The film is introduced by head coach Norm Van Brocklin and presented by Grain Belt Beer. Many NFL fans remember that the Vikings did the unthinkable to start the season – beat the tough Chicago Bears 37-13 at old Metropolitan Stadium in their very first game! On this new 32-minute DVD, you’ll see scrambling rookie quarterback Fran Tarkenton toss his first NFL TD pass to Bob Schnelker for the first touchdown in Minnesota Vikings history! Before Opening Day is over, Viking TD’s are also scored by Jerry Reichow, Hugh McElhenny and Fran Tarkenton himself!
Also given ample coverage are the other two Minnesota victories in ’61. Johnny Unitas and the Baltimore Colts face the Vikings at the Met, but after an exciting 60 minutes of play, the Vikings have outscored the Colts 28-20! Three weeks later, the Vikings close their home season with a win over the Los Angeles Rams, 42-21. Head coach Van Brocklin sums up the Vikings first season and says he’s looking forward to the club improving and becoming a contender in 1962.
After the showing of the three wins, action clips of other games are shown, including games at Detroit and San Francisco and against the Cowboys and World Champion Packers. Several stars are featured with nice close up shots including Tarkenton, DB Charlie Sumner, end Jerry Reichow, LB Rip Hawkins, rookie halfback Tommy Mason and co-captain Hugh McElhenny. Also shown throughout the film are many other Vikings from that memorable first season: Clancy Osborn, Rich Mostardi, Dave Middleton, Jim Marshall, Grady Alderman, Frank Youso, Karl Rubke, Bill Lapham, Mike Rabold, Jack Morris, Mel Triplett, Dean Derby, Jerry Huth, Jim Leo, Jim Prestol, Justin Rowland, Mike Mercer, Raymond Hayes, Gordon Smith, Will Sherman and A.D.
