CLEVELAND BROWNS

The 1957 Cleveland Browns highlight film is now available on DVD, thanks to the expertise of Rare Sportsfilms, Inc! Included is every game from the 14-game schedule (see below). Head coach Paul Brown had selected young Jimmy Brown of Syracuse in the college draft and even before the regular season began, he knew he had something special – a heavily muscled, hard to bring down back who was also fast and shifty enough to slip tackles. Young Brown’s only weakness was blocking, but he had such unusual balance that he became an instant star, and by the end of the season had led the NFL in rushing! It was supposed to be a re-building year for Cleveland and twelve rookies were on the roster to start the season, including Brown, young QB Milt Plum, Vince Costello, Milt Campbell, Fred Robinson and Paul Wiggin. However, behind starting QB Tommy O’Connell, the Browns re-captured the Eastern championship with two games to go in the regular season, making for 11 titles in their 12 years of existence!

This rare 43-minute B & W film is narrated by the old voice of the Browns Ken Coleman, and is presented by SOHIO gasoline and Carling Black Label beer. You’ll see nice closeups of many Browns stars before the games during pre-game warm-ups. Here are some of the Browns you’ll see: Lou Groza, Galen Fiss, Bob Gain, Bobby Freeman, Kenny Konz, Don Paul, Warren Lahr, Chet Hanulak, Darrell Brewster, the Carpenter brothers Preston and Lew, Bill Quinlan, Herschel Forester, Len Ford, Don Colo, Walt Michaels, Chuck Noll, Junior Wren, Jim Ray Smith, Ray Renfro, Billy Reynolds, and Mike McCormack, as well as head coach Paul Brown! Not only will you see many games played at old Municipal Stadium, but you’ll also follow the Browns on the road to other old ballparks that were the homes of several NFL teams nearly 60 years ago: Yankee Stadium, Comiskey Park, Briggs Stadium and Forbes Field. Of course, many stars are also shown on other teams as they play the Browns, such as Dick Modzelewski, Frank Gifford, Norm Van Brocklin, Earl Morrall, Tom Brookshire, Bobby Walston, Clarence Peaks, Ollie Matson, Sonny Jurgensen, Tobin Rote, Hopalong Cassady, Joe Schmidt and Woodley Lewis to name a few!
