EARLY
1950'S
RACING CHAMPIONS
The
1953 Southern 500 at Darlington and the 1953 AAA Stock Car
Race at the old Milwaukee Mile dirt track are two of the latest
historic auto races recently restored and presented by Rare
Sportsfilms on a new 51-minute B & W / Color video! Both
of these races are in beautiful COLOR, along with the 2nd
Annual Sowega International Sports Car Race at Turner AFB
in Albany, Georgia! Also shown on this video are rare B &
W scenes of the 1952 Southern 500, and the first two Motor
City 250's at Detroit in 1951 & 1952! The video is a complete
vintage TV show, "Speedway International" and is
made up of 11 different races, mostly from 1951 and 1952 in
order as follows:
-
100-Mile
AAA Champ Car Race at the old Fairgrounds Dirt Track, Duquoin,
Illinois. Johnnie Parsons, Tony Bettenhausen and Jack McGrath.
-
Troy Ruttman wins 1952 Indy 500! Many old shots never before
seen on video! Alberto Ascari, Bettenhausen, Manny Ayulo.
Russ Catlin interviews flagman Bill Vandewater.
-
1951 - The first ever "Motor City 250" at Detroit.
Tommy Thompson wins 250-Mile NASCAR race at Michigan State
Fairgrounds dirt track. Marshall Teague and Tim Flock start
1-2, but after front-running Thompson and hard-driving Curtis
Turner tangle in late-race crash, Thompson wins.
-
1951 100-Mile Sportsman NASCAR Finals. See the famous "60-Second
Wreck" at Langhorne Speedway!
-
Brief shots of the 1952 Daytona Beach Grand National Race.
Smokey Purser's first lap flip!
-
Fonty Flock wins 1952 Southern 500 at Darlington! Dick Rathmann
crashes into two cars in the pits! Pete Kelley spins his
Hudson and loses a wheel!
-
Tim Flock wins 1952 "Motor City 250" at Detroit!
Dick Rathmann and Fonty Flock start 1-2; Billy Myers loses
wheel; John Scarfo and Jack Fisher tangle on the backstretch!
Other crashes shown.
-
1957 Monza race at Monza, Italy. Jimmy Bryan wins third
heat and takes overall honors as Americans overwhelm Europeans!
Pat O'Connor, Troy Ruttman, Ray Crawford and Johnnie Parsons.
-
Remember the old B & W cartoon Bardahl commercials?
- Sam
Hanks beats out Marshall Teague to win 100-Mile AAA Stock Car
Race at the old Milwaukee Mile dirt track, Wisconsin State Fair
Park. Beautiful COLOR! Nice closeups of Frank Mundy, Jack McGrath,
Hanks and Teague. Watch Dick Rathmann, Norm Nelson, Dick Linder,
Mundy, Johnny Mantz and Ned Presser move the dirt! Also see
spins and crashes involving Charlie Green, Don Dunfee and Ray
Butler. Most spectacular, however is Jack McGrath on the backstretch,
as he crashes, flips and then rolls three times!
- 1953
Southern 500 at Darlington in COLOR! Nice closeups of Tim &
Fonty Flock, Dick Rathmann, Herb Thomas, Junior Johnson and
winner Buck Baker. Herb Thomas leads much of the way, but with
10 laps to go, a blown engine ends his day. Thomas is shown
being pushed around the track by fellow Hudson driver Gene Comstock!
During the race Slick Smith blows a tire on his Olds. Fireball
Roberts blows two tires! (Closeup of Fireball in his Olds having
a cigarette during a long pit stop). Mike Magill's Lincoln comes
to rest "outside the ballpark" and down the first
turn embankment! Tim Flock slams the guardrail in his Hudson
Hornet! The two most spectacular crashes are Lacy Jackson and
Junior Johnson in separate backstretch incidents. With his #75
Holiday Olds sitting in the middle of the track, Johnson climbs
out, raises the hood, tears off the air cleaner and rips off
his shirt to put out a carburetor fire!
- Second
Annual Sowega International Sports Car Race at Turner AFB in
Albany, Georgia. Briggs Cunningham and Jim Kimberly before the
race. Defending champion John Fitch, driving his white #59 Cunningham
CR4 is on the pole. Also shown are the cars of Charles Moran,
Phil Walters and Carl Kling. Bill Spear and his Ferrari win
the race, with Fitch finishing in the runner-up spot. COLOR!
