"Challenge Golf"
at
PEBBLE BEACH, CALIFORNIA
Remember the old "Challenge Golf" TV series starring Arnold Palmer and Gary Player vs other great golfers of the day? Now you can go back in time more than 30 years and enjoy once again watching an episode of this long ago golf TV series. This is the first episode of Challenge Golf ever made available on video and now you can get your own copy of this classic match with Palmer and Player vs that week's challenging team of golf legend Byron Nelson and top pro Ken Venturi, played on one of the world's most spectacular courses, Pebble Beach in California!
The ABC-TV show "Challenge Golf" first aired in January 1963 and a total of 13 episodes were shown on television that spring. With an introduction by Bill Fleming, who explains the USGA rules of play used on Challenge Golf, the show is hosted by Palmer and Player and features them playing a different twosome each week. Arnold and Gary are both miked during the match and comment on both the golf course and the action as play progresses hole by hole throughout the match. On this 50-minute high-quality black and white tape, you'll also hear comments by Byron Nelson and Ken Venturi as they attempt to win this first round match, which aired on ABC March 30th, 1963.
The match is all even as play moves to the par-4 355-yard third hole. From a perfect drive down the center of the fairway, Byron Nelson's 4-iron second shot hits the apron and bounces over the green and down into heavy rough. Watch Nelson hole out from the rough behind the green for a spectacular birdie three! On the par-4 325-yard fourth hole Nelson's short iron second shot lands on the green within three feet of the pin! He birdies again as he and Venturi go 2-up when Player misses his putt in an effort to halve the hole. On the par-3 160-yard fifth hole Nelson's tee shot lands within four feet of the cup. A nice putt gives him three birdies in a row and puts the twosome 3-up on Palmer and Player after only 5 holes. There's good coverage of play at the famous par-5 515-yard sixth hole, one which Nelson himself once called the toughest on the course. You'll see play at the beautiful seventh hole, a short 110-yard par-3 which protrudes out into the ocean. Palmer holes a six-foot birdie putt to help cut into Nelson and Venturi's lead. At the par-4 450-yard ninth hole Arnie wows the crowd with a spectacular 35-foot birdie putt to gain back another point.
You'll enjoy hearing all four golfers discuss the par-4 421-yard 10th hole from the 10th tee. Palmer's comment after Nelson hits his drive gives everyone a good laugh!
Ken Venturi's nice 12-foot birdie putt at the 16th green is just one of his contributions to the Nelson-Venturi cause during this match.
This is the first time a "Challenge Golf" TV Show has ever been made available on video, and now you can get your own 50-minute high-quality copy for only $29.95 plus $5.00 shipping (Illinois residents must add $2.00 sales tax).
