Rare Sports Films
1958 Rose Bowl
(Partial TV Broadcast)

Thanks to a new discovery and the restoration expertise of Rare Sportsfilms Inc, another rare vintage broadcast treasure is now available on home video to sports fans everywhere! The oldest remaining play-by-play TV broadcast of a Rose Bowl game is the '58 classic between Ohio State and Oregon, and it is also the oldest surviving game showing either school! Reels 1, 3 and 5 of the original 5-reel telecast are still in existence, and are shown on this new 1 hour, 22 minute video. Included are the original TV commercials for Gillette Safety Razors and Toni Hair Products, on this Gillette Cavalcade Of Sports Presentation!

The coin toss is covered 'live' at midfield as the team captains are introduced. Ohio State HB #44 Dick LeBeau receives Oregon's kickoff and brings the ball out to the 21 to start play from scrimmage. After a 15 play, 79-yd TD drive, the Bucks are quickly out in front 7-0. The big play is a 36-yd pass reception by Jim Houston.

After a shaving cream commercial, reel 3 shows the entire halftime show, including the performances of both the University of Oregon Band and the Ohio State University Marching Band. Mel Allen does the play-by-play, with Chick Hearn providing color commentary and describing the halftime activities. In those days, there were few interruptions of the action and viewers saw a whole different era of television broadcasting. At halftime, heavily favored Ohio State and underdog Oregon are tied 7-7. Reel 3 shows the first few plays of the second half. Reel 5 begins with about 11 minutes left in the game. Don Sutherin has just kicked a 34-yard field goal to give the Buckeyes a slim 10-7 lead. The rest of the game is a struggle, with Oregon striving for the winning touchdown and Ohio State trying to run out the clock by keeping the ball on the ground. Buckeye quarterback Frank Kremblas does not throw a pass in the second half, while Oregon quarterback Jack Crabtree is 13 of 20 for 151 yards in the game. In the waning moments, Crabtree ties a 34-year old record with his 13th completion, as the Ducks mount their final drive! Ron Stover plays an outstanding game for Oregon, with 9 catches, but his clip near the end of the game hurts the Webfoots' chances. A key fumble recovery by DB Joe Cannavino of Ohio State kills a late game rally by Oregon, and Jim Houston's sack of QB Crabtree snuffs out Oregon's final hope at the end of the game.

Throughout the telecast you'll see former Buckeye greats in action: Galen Cisco, Bill Jobko, Dick Schafrath, Jim Marshall, Aurelius Thomas, Bob White (25 carries for 93 yards), Leo Brown, Birtho Arnold, Don Clark, Dan Fronk and others. In action for Len Casanova's Oregon Ducks are Jack Morris, Jim Shanley, Joe Schaffeld, Jerry Kershner, Bob Peterson, J.C. Wheeler, Jim Linden, Bob Grottkau, Charlie Tourville, Alden Kimbrough, Don Laudenslager, Willie West, Greg Altenhofen, Darrel Aschbacher, Bob Heard, Dave Fish, Will Reeve, Tom Keele, Leroy Phelps, John Willener, Marlan Holland and John Robinson.

During timeouts, you'll see Sherman Lollar and Luis Aparicio of the Chicago White Sox and Frank Malzone of the Boston Red Sox doing Gillette Shaving commercials! During the post game wrap-up, excited fans tear down the wooden goal posts as the Ohio State Marching Band marches across the field and out of the stadium playing "Buckeye Battle Cry"!
