OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY MARCHING BAND
Now on DVD and BLU-RAY!
On this new 2+1/4-hour double-disc DVD set are both the pre-game and halftime shows for six different games, including four with Script Ohio's, as well as the Fiesta Bowl performance in Tempe! OSU Marching Band director is Dr. Paul Droste, and the drum major is Bruce Hart. Here are the films you'll see in order, and all in color! This 2-disc set is also available on Blu-Ray for only $10 extra.
"Michael Jackson's Greatest Hits" (SILENT film) - At Kinnick Stadium, IOWA (14-20) - OSUMB enters the field from the north sidelines on drum cadence and playing "Buckeye Battle Cry", segues into "Fight, Fight Fight for Iowa" while spelling out "IOWA", then plays "Across the Field" for the forming of the triple block "O" before executing a double Script Ohio. At halftime, the band enters from the top sideline ("Thriller" fanfare), executes two kaleidoscopic drills while playing "Billie Jean" and "Beat It", then moves into a concert formation for the playing of "Ben". The band's finale is a six-song Jackson Medley.
"Nobody Does It Better" - PURDUE (33-22) - Pre-game: Ramp entrance. The National Anthem is conducted by Dr. William Moffit, director of Athletic Bands at Purdue, and after flag raising, the OSUMB plays "Hail Purdue", forms "PURDUE" facing the east stands, then segues into "Beautiful Ohio". Saluting the United Way by forming "UW 83" on the field, the band plays "One Voice". To conclude pre-game, the band performs Script Ohio, however, much of the Script is missing from this film. Halftime: The visiting Purdue band performs first with the show, "A Salute to College Marching Bands, The Greatest Show on Earth". Afterward, the OSUMB enters from the north end of the field playing "Only Time Will Tell". Next, the band plays "What A Feeling", as it moves into a circle drill that finishes in a huge star formation. In the star, the band plays "Macarena". As the band plays its final number, "Nobody Does It Better", a drill gradually changes the star into a final formation with the unfurling of a giant Ohio flag at the 50-yard line, which climaxes halftime.
"Cole Porter Revisited" - MICHIGAN STATE (21-11) - For the second straight home game, Ohio State hosts a visiting band, and the National Anthem is conducted by Professor David Catron, director of the Michigan State Marching Band. After the traditional flag raising, the OSUMB welcomes MSU by playing the Michigan State fight song and forming a monogram "MSU" facing east. Music segues to "Beautiful Ohio", and the band moves into a concert formation for an encore presentation of "Macarena", this time to the East stands, as drum major Bruce Hart and trumpet soloist John Hill are featured. The pre-game show ends with the band in a Diamond Ohio formation, playing "Chimes" and "Carmen Ohio" to the press box side of the stadium. Most of the Michigan State halftime show is also on this DVD. The music of Cole Porter is featured in the OSUMB halftime show and the band enters from both ends of the stadium playing "Anything Goes". Executing a precision drill, the music segues into "Just One of Those Things" and "You're the Top" as the band moves into a concert formation for the playing of "Don't Fence Me In" and "You Do Something To Me". The band then executes a final drill for the playing of perhaps Porter's most famous song, "Begin the Beguine" which ends halftime.
"A Salute To Coach Woody Hayes" - WISCONSIN (45-27) - (Homecoming) - Following the traditional ramp entrance and playing of the National Anthem, the band marches back upfield playing two choruses of "On Wisconsin" while forming a huge "W" within a circle facing the east side of the stadium. A segue into "I Wanna Go Back to Ohio State" brings the band to form a crown for the annual homecoming festivities at midfield (not shown). Following the ceremonies, the band ends pre-game with the sound of the campus chimes and "Carmen Ohio". At halftime, the band enters from the east sideline playing "Big Band Sound of Fight the Team". Continuing with "Big Ten Medley", the band executes a line drill which ends in a concert formation in the center of the field. "Auld Lang Syne" is played as Woody Hayes' OSU coaching records are announced to the crowd and a large banner with a likeness of Coach Hayes is unfurled on the field. In a ceremony, Mr. John W. Galbreath and OSU President Edward Jennings make a formal presentation to Coach Hayes, honoring him for his induction into the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame. After Coach Hayes speaks briefly, the band rises from a kneeling position and plays a chorus of "Across the Field" on its way to the triple block "O" for Script Ohio. Halftime ends with Coach Hayes dotting the "I", waving and bowing to the stadium crowd! NOTE: We have added additional SILENT footage of the on-field ceremony and Woody dotting the "i" at the end of the show!
"Hollywood Blockbusters" - NORTHWESTERN (55-7) - Pre-game: Traditional Ramp Entrance. Conducting the OSUMB for the National Anthem is Dr. Fred Hemke, Dept. Chairman of Wind and Percussion Instruments at Northwestern University. After flag raising, the OSUMB marches back upfield playing "Go U Northwestern" and forming a large "N" facing the east stands. This segues into "I'm Looking Over a Four-Leaf Clover" for a clover formation with an "H" on each of the four leaves in recognition of the opening of the new Ohio 4-H Center in the Agricultural Administration Building on campus. At this point, a brief ceremony is also held in front of the clover at the 50-yard line to honor the Grove City High School Band, winner of the first annual Buckeye Invitational Marching Band Contest held in Ohio Stadium. A trophy presentation is made to Jim Swearingen, director of the band, by OSU Marching Band Directors Paul Droste and Jon Woods. The final Script Ohio of the home season culminates pre-game. At halftime, the show opens with "Don't Stop 'Till You Get Enough" fanfare, then continues with "Hollywood" upon entering the field from the East sidelines in two company fronts, which then become four as they march toward the west. These fronts then present two diamond drills, the second while playing "Boogie Down" and ending in a concert formation for the playing of the "Main Theme from Star Wars", which then segues into "The Imperial March from E.T." and the finale drill.
"Hollywood Blockbusters" (SILENT film) - AT MICHIGAN (21-24) - Halftime begins with the OSUMB presenting last week's show "Hollywood Blockbusters" to the huge crowd at Ann Arbor (see above).
"Nobody Does it Better" - FIESTA BOWL - PITTSBURGH (28-23) -
Entering from the North end zone ("Buckeye Battle Cry" and "Fight the Team"), the OSUMB marches into the triple block "O" to present a double Script Ohio, followed by the playing of "Chimes" and "Carmen Ohio". On "Beautiful Ohio", the band then marches into an eagle crest formation for the playing of the National Anthem (not shown). For halftime, the band presents one of the best shows from earlier in the season ("Nobody Does It Better") with slight modifications (different P.A. announcements).
