"GAME-OF-THE-WEEK"

Sunday November 6, 1966

Minnesota Vikings

vs

Green Bay Packers

Another rare "Lost Game" of NFL Films has been released on DVD exclusively by Rare Sportsfilms, Inc.! Minnesota fans will remember this game as only the second time their team was able to beat the Packers, and to win against the defending World Champions at Lambeau Field was indeed something special!

Lombardi's Packers host this game with a 7-1 record, losing only at San Francisco by a single point, 20-21, while the Vikings under first head coach Norm Van Brocklin are 2-4-1. Each team only scores two touchdowns and Fred Cox hits on two FG's while Don Chandler kicks one. All four TD's are scored on the ground, and all from two yards or less! Green Bay opens the scoring on a first quarter run by Jim Taylor. The Vikings retaliate in the second quarter with Bill Brown going over from the 1-yd line, tying the game,7-7. On the next possession, Chandler kicks his FG from 11 yards out putting Green Bay back in front, 10-7. But before the half, Fred Cox kicks one from 31 yards and the score is tied at halftime, 10-10.

Running the ball so far for Green Bay has been Taylor and especially Elijah Pitts. For Minnesota, runners Bill Brown and Tommy Mason have been moving the ball for the Vikings and scrambling Fran Tarkenton has located Jim Phillips for four receptions. From the pocket, Fran gets excellent pass protection this entire game. Green Bay re-takes the lead in the third quarter with a two-yard TD run by Pitts (17-10). The Vikings' get closer in the final quarter when Cox kicks a 16-yd FG, to bring the score to 17-13. Tommy Mason is badly hurt (left knee) and his replacement Dave Osborn does an excellent job, with half a dozen good carries himself, as the Vikings drive to the winning TD, a dive over the goal line by Bill Brown for the first Minnesota lead in the entire game! With poor field position from then on, Green Bay cannot regain the lead and the Vikings have their second all-time win against the Packers, oddly both at Green Bay ('64 and now '66)!

Throughout this DVD, narrated by Jack Whitaker, you'll see many other Vikings of the day: Preston Carpenter, Jim Marshall, Bobby Walden, Ed Sharockman, Paul Flatley, Doug Davis, Karl Kassulke, Paul Dixon, Mike Fitzgerald and more. You'll recognize many Packers shown such as QB Bart Starr, Bob Jeter, Ray Nitschke, Willie Davis, Dave Robinson, Carroll Dale, Boyd Dowler, Paul Hornung, Fuzzy Thurston, Jerry Kramer, Dave Robinson, Herb Adderley, Lee Roy Caffey, Lionel Aldridge, Willie Wood, Donny Anderson, Henry Jordan, Marv Fleming and Ron Kostelnik.
