"GAMES-OF-THE-WEEK"

(Week 5)

Cardinals vs Giants at St. Louis plus Bears vs Colts at Wrigley Field

Both Games On One DVD!

This 51-minute DVD shows two original NFL "Game of the Week" TV shows: the St. Louis Cardinals (4-0) vs the New York Giants (0-3-1) in St. Louis, and the 1-2 Chicago Bears at home in Wrigley Field, Chicago against the 2-1 Baltimore Colts. Both games were played Sunday October 9, 1966.

At St. Louis the Cardinals have been outplayed in the first half and the Giants are leading 13-0 at the intermission. A first quarter 9-yd TD pass from Earl Morrall to Homer Jones, plus 32 and 37-yard FGs by Pete Gogolak account for all the scoring. Gogolak kicks four FG's in this game, but this is the only TD New York will post all day. St. Louis finally gets on the scoreboard midway thru the third quarter when Johnny Roland runs in from 3 yards out, making the score 13-7. After Pete's third 3-pointer to start the final period, the Cardinals finish another drive with a touchdown narrowing the score to 16-14 Giants. Gogolak's final FG extends the Giants lead to 19-14. When the Giants get the ball again, Morrall is picked off at mid-field by one of the fine Redbird safeties, Jerry Stovall. On a 4th down play from the Giants 25 yard line with only 3 minutes left, Charlie Johnson passes complete to Billy Gambrell, who narrowly makes it over the goal line to put the Cardinals in front for the first time in the game, 21-19! Penalties plague the Giants all day, and on New York's final drive, they're flagged for two more before Morrall is sacked by Fred Heron and the Giants must punt. A 36-yd FG by dependable Jim Bakken on the Cardinals next drive ices the game, and St. Louis beats the Giants, 24-19.

This Colts-Bears contest is another "Lost Game" of NFL Films! After being shown only one time as the "Game of the Week" in 1966, this game was never again offered to the public, not even in the NFL Films Special Order Catalog, which was closed forever last April!

Wrigley Field is sold out on a sunny day with Baltimore in town for the Bears' home opener. A 42-yard FG by Roger LeClerc starts the scoring in the first quarter. Johnny Unitas misses a snap from center and Joe Fortunato picks up the ball, races 27 yards into the end zone, and the Bears first TD is scored by a linebacker! This 10-0 Bear lead and a second quarter interception by Bennie McRae of a first and goal to go pass by Unitas gets the Colts and Johnny off to a rough start in this game! There are two missed field goals by LeClerc, another interception by Bennie McRae and many penalties on both sides during this first half. However Unitas drives the Colts on one of his patented 'beat the clock' drills and with five seconds left has the Colts on the Bear 6-yard line. Colts kicker Lou Michaels boots a half-ending FG and Baltimore dents the scoreboard, now trailing 10-3. In the third quarter Rudy Bukich hands off to Gayle Sayers, and the star halfback scores on a 30-yard TD run, giving the Bears a 17-3 lead! Some nice second half running by 10-year veteran Jon Arnett is featured on the way to another FG by LeClerc and the Bear lead mounts to 20-3. Then, a Bukich pass is intercepted by Bobby Boyd and returned 35 yards for the Colts first touchdown of the day as the score becomes 20-10. In the 4th quarter on a third and goal at the Colt six, Bukich hands the ball to Sayers who scores his second TD of the day and the Bears now lead, 27-10. Finally, late in the game on a second and nine from the Colts 21, Unitas tosses a short pass to TE John Mackey and with help from blocker Lenny Moore, Mackey goes all the way with a 79-yard TD run after the catch to make the final score Bears 27, Colts 17.
