"GAME-OF-THE-WEEK"

Cleveland Browns

vs

Washington Redskins

This December 5, 1965 Browns-Redskins NFL “Game-Of-The-Week” film is another “Lost Game” of NFL Films from the vast Rare Sportsfilms library of lost NFL films not available from any other source – not even NFL Films has this one! Narrated by Jim Gibbons, the 25-minute film, now available on DVD, is in gorgeous COLOR!

The defending NFL Champion Browns clinched another Eastern Title the week before vs. Pittsburgh and are 9-2 entering this game at old Municipal Stadium, Cleveland. No one knew it at the time, but Jim Brown is playing in his last season, and this is his third from last NFL game! The Redskins are 5-1 in their last 6 games after starting the season at 0-5.

In the first quarter, Joe Rutgens knocks the ball loose from Cleveland QB Frank Ryan and Carl Kammerer recovers the ball for Washington on the Browns’ 15-yard line! Four consecutive running plays by Charlie Taylor move the ball into the end zone for a touchdown (the last two runs are not shown) and Washington leads 6-0. But Bob Jencks’ PAT attempt is blocked by Vince Costello. Early in the second quarter, Ryan moves the Browns on a long drive ending with a 7-yard TD pass to his favorite receiver, Gary Collins, and now the Browns lead 7-6. The Redskins score next on a 6-yard TD pass from Sonny Jurgensen to Pat Richter, putting Washington back in the lead, 13-7. Near the end of the half, a Bob Jencks 20-yard FG increases the Redskins' lead to 16-7.

A long third-quarter Cleveland drive (with many unusual twists and turns) has the Browns with a first and goal at the five, but a 9-yard loss by Brown then a 15-yard penalty push the Browns back to the 42-yard line. However, a Lou Groza FG makes the score 16-10.

Linebacker Vince Costello intercepts Jurgensen at the Browns’ 42 to begin the final quarter. A pass to Collins brings the Browns to the Redskins’ 20. On third and 9 at the 14, Ryan looks right, then throws left to Tom Hutchinson for the go-ahead touchdown! Late in the game with Cleveland still leading 17-16, Jurgensen is rushed and spilled at his own 25-yard line, fumbles, and Jim Houston recovers the ball at the Washington 18! Soon, on second and goal at the five, Jim Brown scores his 20th TD of the year, tying Lenny Moore’s season record from a year ago! With the score now 24-16 and little time remaining, Groza kicks off to the Redskins. George Hughley receives the ball and runs it back 47 yards to the Browns’ 49! A pass to Bobby Mitchell moves the ball down to the Browns’ 18. But Jurgensen’s 3rd down pass is intercepted by Bernie Parrish, the clock runs out, and the Browns are 24-16 winners!

Throughout the game, you’ll see many other Browns of the day: Erich Barnes, Bernie Parrish, Walter Roberts, Ernie Green, Walter Beach, Gene Hickerson, Monte Clark, Sid Williams, Paul Wiggin, Bill Glass, John Wooten, Ross Fichtner, and Johnny Brewer. Also in action for the Redskins are Bob Pellegrini, Willie Adams, Johnny Sample, John Reger, Lonnie Sanders, Jim Steffen, Paul Krause, Chris Hanburger, Sam Huff, Ron Snidow, Vince Promuto, Darrell Dess, Angie Coya, Dave Crossan, Fred Williams, Dan Lewis, and more!
