1961 NFL PRO BOWL GAME

A 26-minute B & W 1960 NFL highlight film and the 29-minute full color 1961 NFL Pro Bowl game film are both now available for the first time ever on DVD, thanks to Rare Sportsfilms, Inc! These films were produced by Tel Ra and Cine-Sports years before NFL Films came into existence!

Introduced by Tom Harmon and with narration by sportscaster Jim Leaming, the 1960 film covers all six games from Sunday November 20 (Week #9) of the NFL season. Titled “National Pro Highlights”, here are the games and highlights, shown in order:

Cardinals (4-4) vs Redskins (1-4-2) at Griffith Stadium – A Ralph Guglielmi to Joe Walton TD pass puts ‘Skins in front, but a safety plus three John Roach to Sonny Randle TD passes and a Jerry Perry FG build third period Redbird 26-7 lead. Washington scores final points in 26-14 game when Frank Mesntik fumbles at the three and Gary Glick falls on the ball in the St. Louis end zone. It’s the first time the Cardinals have ever won both games over Washington in a season!

Bears (3-3-1) vs Lions (3-4) at Wrigley Field – First Zeke Bratkowski, then Ed Brown connect with flanker Will Dewveall on long TD passes and Chicago leads 14-0 at halftime. A 4-yd TD run by rookie Nick Pietrosante brings Detroit closer at 14-7 but Ed Brown’s 1-yd TD plunge and a 4th quarter 36-yd TD run by Johnny Morris ends the scoring in a 28-7 Bear victory.

Browns (5-2) vs Steelers (2-5-1) at Forbes Field – Steelers lead 7-0 at halftime on John Henry Johnson’s short TD run. By the end of the third quarter Sam Baker’s 19-yd FG gets Cleveland on the scoreboard. Then in the final period, Milt Plum finds Rich Kreitling for a TD, finally giving the Browns the lead, 10-7. But Bobby Layne brings Steelers back with a TD pass to Tom Tracy to put Steelers back on top, 14-10. Plum then works the ball down the field, trying to win the game, but his final pass to Leon Clarke is ruled “no-catch” by the end zone official and Pittsburgh hangs on for a 14-10 win in a thrilling finish!

49’er’s (3-4) vs Cowboys (0-8) at The Cotton Bowl – A Don Meredith to Jim Doren TD pass and two Tommy Davis FG’s account for the 7-6 first half scoring in this game. Another Davis FG and an Eddie LeBaron TD pass to Frank Clarke push the score to 14-9 Dallas by the 4th quarter. The 49’ers finally go ahead on a 20-yd score by C.R. Roberts and S.F. leads 16-14. After a 4th Davis FG, J.D. Smith clinches the game with a final TD in a 26-14 San Francisco win.

Eagles (6-1) vs Giants (5-1-1) at Yankee Stadium – A 1-yd TD run by Joe Morrison and a field goal have the Giants in front 10-0 at halftime. But a long Van Brocklin TD pass to Tommy McDonald and a Bobby Walston FG tie the game 10-10 by the end of the third quarter. Jim Carr picks up a Mel Triplett fumble in the final period and scores the winning touchdown, as Eagles prevail, 17-10 in pivotal game for both clubs. It’s the first win at New York for Philadelphia since 1952!!

Rams (2-5-1) vs Packers (5-2) at County Stadium – Second-place Packers can tie the idle Colts with a win and are leading 3-0 when Paul Hornung’s TD extends margin to 10-0 early. But Bill Wade TD passes to Del Shofner and Jim Phillips plus two Danny Villanueva FG’s have L.A. ahead 20-10 at halftime. Continuing into the 3rd. quarter, another TD pass reception by Phillips and FG by Villanueva add 10 more points before Tom Moore’s 59-yd TD run ups the score to 30-17 at the end of the third quarter. In the final period the Packers make a stirring comeback. With a halfback option pass from Hornung to Boyd Dowler and another touchdown by Hornung, the Packers have regained the lead, 31-30! But with 22 seconds left, Danny Villaneuva’s 4th FG of the game wins it for the Rams, 33-31!

The 1961 (11th Annual) NFL Pro Bowl Game at the Memorial Coliseum is remembered for great plays by the stars of the NFL. This was the last game ever played by Norm Van Brocklin and the last game coached by Buck Shaw of the World Champion Philadelphia Eagles. Johnny Unitas was named game MVP for a second time, a new first for the classic. Narrated by Chris Schenkel, the film features many nice color closeups of players before the game, such as Tommy McDonald, Bobby Walston, Pete Retzlaff, Chuck Bednarik, Milt Plum, Jim Brown, Bobby Mitchell, John David Crow, Sonny Randle and Sam Huff, of the East, and Bart Starr, Les Richter, Lenny Moore, Joe Schmidt, Nick Pietrosante, Gail Cogdill, Bill George, Jim Parker, Leo Nomellini, Bill Forester, Jim Ringo, Paul Hornung, Jim Taylor and coach Vince Lombardi of the West.
