HOUSTON OILERS
“Road To The Championship”
“Road To The Championship” is the filmed story of the Houston Oilers first year, a year they became the first AFL Champions under Head Coach Lou Rymkus. Narrated by Carl Mann, this 22-minute black and white film covers the highlights of most of the games during the Oilers 1960 season, including the first ever AFL Championship Game in which the Oilers beat the old Los Angeles Chargers.
Players that made Oiler history in that first year are shown in game-action throughout the film: George Blanda, Mark Johnston, Heisman trophy winner Billy Cannon, Dave Smith, Tom Witcher, Jack Atchason, Bill Groman, Jerry Helluin, Charley Kendall, Denit Morris, Charley Hennigan, Doug Cline, Charlie Tolar, Jim Norton, Bobby Gordon, Dalva Allen and Bob Talamini. Some highlights include: Kenny Hall’s 104-yard kickoff return vs Titans, Blanda’ record 53-yard FG vs. Bills, Billy Cannon’s first pro TD vs. New York and his 88-yard TD run vs. Pats in the last game of the regular season, and rookie QB Jackie Lee’s heroics as he steps in for injured George Blanda and sets two league passing records in the rain and mud! Also shown are star players on other clubs, such as Jack Kemp, Cotton Davidson, Art Powell, Al Dorow and Frank Tripuka.
Less-than-great quality game coaching films were used to make most of this promotional film, with narration added in the studio, however, this rare film is the only one of its kind known to exist and is a treat for early AFL and Houston Oiler fans to watch.
