1953 NFL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME – In Color!

The Browns are now in their league championship game for the 8th straight year, counting their wins in the old All-America Conference (this feat will never again be duplicated). Two future Hall-of-Fame Quarterbacks face off in this game and Bobby Layne has a better day than Otto Graham. On the second play of the game, rookie linebacker Joe Schmidt drives through Otto’s pass protection and slams Graham to the ground, the ball bouncing out of his hand. With a crash, 300lb. lineman Les Bingaman falls on the ball at the Browns’ 13-yard line! On the Lions’ sixth play, Doak Walker’s 1-yard TD run puts the Lions in front 7-0. Walker and Lou Groza swap FG’s in the second quarter and at halftime the Lions lead 10-3. Ken Gorgal intercepts a Layne pass in the third period and the Browns drive 51 yards for a tying TD, all on running plays but one. In the final quarter, Groza hits FG’s of 15 and 45 yards for a 16-10 Cleveland lead with 4:10 left. But with just a little over two minutes remaining, Bobby Layne engineers the Lions comeback with a perfectly thrown 33-yard TD pass to Jim Doran, tying the game, and with Doak Walker’s PAT the Lions have a 17-16 lead! Cleveland then must at least get into position for a FG; however, on Graham’s first play, his pass is picked off by Carl Karilivacz, and this clinches a second consecutive World Title for the Lions!
