PITTSBURGH STEELERS

The 1951 Pittsburgh Steelers season highlights (first six games of the season), is now on a 26-minute DVD for nostalgic viewing!

In the early 1950's (long before the birth of NFL Films), pro football team highlight films showed all twelve games of the season, however because these were so long, they were split up on two reels per year (Part I & Part II). Today, few of these old reels are known to remain in existence. This first half of the 1951 Steelers is the only film print known to exist!

Under head coach John Michelosen the 1951 Steelers were the last of the NFL teams to use the old single wing offense. Their defense, lead by stalwarts Bill McPeak, Ernie Stautner, Dale Dodrill and others still was a hard-nosed unit which gave up few points. Problem was, the rest of the NFL teams were by now using the new high-powered passing attacks which often left the Steelers quickly behind with one good outburst. Only when the defense could hold the enemy to two TD's or less could the Steelers win. Their season record in 1951 was 4-7-1.

In this nostalgic film, you'll see both night and day games at old Forbes Field in Pittsburgh. Great shots throughout show the old ballpark from several interesting angles, including the outfield wall, left field scoreboard, left field bleachers and Cathedral of Learning, etc. Players on the 1951 Steeler squad who you'll see in action in this film include Howard Hartley, Jack Butler and Jerry Shipkey. On offense, names from the past such as rookie Chuck Ortmann, Val Jansante, Lou Allen, Henry Manarik, Joe Geri, Jim Finks, Ray Mathews, Fran Rogel and Lynn Chandnois are all shown in action.

Great players on other clubs shown battling the Steelers in games both at home and on the road include Tom Landry, Charley Conerly, Frank Gifford, and Kyle Rote of the Giants, Tobin Rote and Tony Canadeo of the Packers, Frankie Albert, Y.A. Tittle and Joe Perry of the 49'ers, Otto Graham and Lou Groza of the Browns, and Adrian Burk and Pete Pihos of the Eagles. Here are the games you will see on this DVD:
